The Year Is Waiting

by Laivy Hart

This song is dedicated to the moment we stand between the year that was and the year that is about to begin. Rosh Hashanah is not only a time to ask for what we want, it is a time to recognize that every year is a gift, every person is judged, and every new beginning carries the possibility of becoming more of who we were meant to be.

Another year is closing

I can almost see it go

Twelve months that I was given

Some I used, some I let go

There were days I made a difference

There were days I missed the mark

There were doors I should have opened

There were chances left in the dark

And now the year is ending

And another one begins

Before I ask for anything

I have to look at where I've been

Because Rosh Hashanah comes

And suddenly I understand

This isn't just another date

Another number on the calendar

I'm standing here

With everything I've done

And everything I still can become

And the year is waiting

For what I'll do with it

Every year I make a plan

Every year I make a list

Here is what I want to change

Here is everything I missed

Here is what I want to build

Here is where I want to grow

Here are all the things I need

And all the things I hope will come

I can tell You what I'm hoping

I can tell You what I need

I can make my case for tomorrow

I can tell You what I want to achieve

But then I hear the words

And suddenly I understand

I can make the plans

I can make the case

But I don't decide

What will be placed in my hands

There is a measure

There is a plan

There is a year

I don't understand

I can ask

I can dream

I can prepare

For what will be

So what am I asking for?

Not simply more

Not simply less

Give me what You know I need

To become what I can become

If You give me more

Let me know what to do with more

If You give me less

Let me not become less

If a door opens

Give me courage to walk through

If something closes

Give me strength to walk another road

I don't control

What comes into my life

But I can decide

What I do with what arrives

And then I remember

Today

The world begins again

And maybe that's why

I get another chance

Not because yesterday didn't happen

It did

I carry it with me

But it doesn't have to be

The final word

A new year

A new page

A new chance

Not to become somebody else

But to become

More of who I was meant to be

A new year is opening

A new year is mine to live

And I'm standing here

With another year

Another chance

Another beginning

A new year

A new beginning

A year I haven't lived yet

And I'm ready
