Some people search for Heaven by leaving the world behind. The Torah teaches the opposite: the way to Heaven begins with your feet firmly planted on the ground.
Some people want to fly without ever touching the ground, to be like an angel and forget about tomorrow. But Jacob's ladder didn't start in the sky it planted its feet in the earth, and its head touched heaven.
Because you don't rise up without dirt on your hands, and until you sanctify the earth, you don't touch the sky.
And behold, a ladder set on the ground, its top reaching the heavens, and behold, angels of God going up and down on it.
Mishpatim (civil laws) are the rung that stands on the ground — don't steal, don't hurt, don't break a soul. First be a person, first stand upright, because the soul is sanctified when the world isn't lawless.
This isn't the low rung — it's the root of everything. Whoever doesn't stand on the earth won't rise with any voice.
And behold, a ladder set on the ground, its top reaching the heavens, and behold, angels of God going up and down on it.
Eidot (testimonies) are the voice of the heart that remembers who it's singing to — Shabbos, Pesach, Sukkos, a covenant unbroken. Tefillin on the arm, tefillin on the head, to testify every day that we belong to the Holy One.
Here the spirit wakes up, here the connection is revealed, here a person isn't just doing — he remembers who he's rising toward.
And behold, a ladder set on the ground, its top reaching the heavens, and behold, angels of God going up and down on it.
And there are chukim (statutes) reason can't fully reach — meat and milk, shatnez, the ashes of the red heifer. Here I don't say I understand why. Here I rise even higher, because You said so, and this is my soul.
Here the soul touches something above me, and precisely when I don't understand, I know that I am Yours.
And behold, a ladder set on the ground, its top reaching the heavens, and behold, angels of God going up and down on it.
A ladder of fasting, a ladder of voice, a ladder of money — all climbing to a high place. Fasting is the body doing teshuva, voice is the heart rising in prayer, money is the earth turned into charity — and so a person climbs the ladder.
And if you want to be an angel, don't run from the world. Because angels of God go up and down on it — rising from the earth and descending to sanctify it, rising to the heavens and coming back down here with God's name.
And behold, a ladder set on the ground, its top reaching the heavens, and behold, angels of God going up and down on it.
You don't rise to heaven without standing on the earth. You don't leave the world — you elevate it to God. A ladder set on the ground, its top reaching the heavens.
