You fought for every inch you gained You fell, you rose, you tried again You worked when others walked away And gave your all from day to day
We watched you struggle, watched you grow We watched you find your way to go And every time you hit the ground You found the strength to turn around
My cherished child, My beloved one.
You found your place, you made your mark You learned to lead, you lit the dark You stood among the finest there And earned your place because you dared
Then came the years when nothing fit You searched for where you could commit You stumbled, wandered, lost your way But kept on searching day by day
Whenever I speak his name, I remember him just the same.
You chose a road we never knew A road that belonged to only you You found your strength, you found your call And learned to lead, to stand up tall
Now others look to you for way You help them find their path each day You lead them forward, help them see The man they have the strength to be
My heart still yearns for him, I will have mercy, says Hashem.
Not for me, and not for my pride Not to bring you to my side I only wish that you could see What this old truth could help you be
You may believe it holds you back Or takes you from the road you track But it will never dim your light It will make every strength burn bright
It won't replace the life you've made It won't undo the man you've trained It is an older, deeper part That adds new strength to who you are
You have the courage, you have the drive You've built a life, you've learned to thrive But there is something still to find An ancient light you left behind
Not less ambition, something more Not closing doors you've opened before But adding depth to all you do And making more of the man in you
