Geshem V'Tal

by Laivy Hart

Why did Chazal say that when Bnei Yisrael asked Hashem for rain, He answered with something even better: dew? Rain is essential, but it comes and goes. Dew descends quietly every single day. Perhaps the message is that while we naturally pray for Geshem, the physical blessings that sustain our lives, Hashem longs to give us something even greater: the everlasting Tal of Torah, Tal that sustains life. Physical blessings are the means; spiritual growth is the end. Rain nourishes the earth, but dew nourishes the soul. Today, tomorrow, and for eternity.

We asked for rain — bread and peace, a home and a livelihood, light every day.
That we'd have quiet, that we'd have enough, that the heart could rest and stop asking "until when."

You hear the pain in the voice, but You know what actually fills everything.

Rain for the earth, dew for the soul. Rain to ease things, dew for joy.
Rain from the outside, dew on the inside. I will be like dew to Israel, forever, forever, forever and ever.

We thought a little more and we'd finally be happy — a little more money, a little more quiet, a few more good days.
But rain is only a covering over the cold and the worry. It removes the obstacle, but it doesn't fill the soul.

What comes from outside opens gates, but only dew from above actually fills a life.

Rain for the earth, dew for the soul. Rain to ease things, dew for joy.
Rain from the outside, dew on the inside. I will be like dew to Israel, forever, forever, forever and ever.

And let it come like rain to us, so Israel asked — something we sometimes want and sometimes don't even ask for.
And You answered with great mercy: I will be like dew to Israel forever.

Dew of revival, dew of the soul, dew of closeness, dew of joy.
Dew in this world, dew for the World to Come — dew that fills me, outside and in.

Rain for the earth, dew for the soul. Rain to ease things, dew for joy.
Rain from the outside, dew on the inside. I will be like dew to Israel, forever, forever, forever and ever.

I will be like dew to Israel, forever, forever, forever and ever, for all eternity.
