Asking for 1

by Laivy Hart

Dovid HaMelech's tefila is dedicated to anyone who has ever looked at life and seen a thousand pieces that did not seem to belong together. One story behind the moments we understand and the moments we cannot. We may not need a different world; perhaps what we need is different eyes.

Every day we say

We say it in the morning
We say it late at night

We carry these words with us
We know them by heart
But knowing that He is One
Is only where we start

Because I look around me
And everything divides

I see the joy and sorrow
The wrong and the right

I see the doors that open
I see the ones that close

I see the things I understand
And all the things I don't

I see a thousand pieces
Scattered before my eyes

But maybe there is One
behind the thousand sides

Maybe I don't need
another answer

Maybe I don't need
another way

Maybe I need the eyes
to see the One

Inside the world
I see today

We call one moment blessing
Another one a loss

We call one road a victory
Another road a cross

We ask why this was given
We ask why that was taken

We wonder why some dreams arrive
And others leave us waiting

But what if every chapter
Belongs to one great story?

What if the things I cannot see
Are still within His glory?

What if the road I wanted
Was never meant to be?

And what if what I thought was broken
Was beyond what I could see?

I see a single moment
He sees the years to come

I see a single answer
He sees where it came from

I see the piece before me
He sees the picture whole

And maybe all I'm missing
Is the vision of the One

I don't need to call
the darkness light

I don't need to say
that wrong is right

I only need to know
that what I see

Is never all
there is to see

And maybe
is closer than I thought

Not somewhere far away
Not somewhere I must find

This room can be His house
This street can be His home

The people that surround me
Are not outside His world

The laughter at the table
The silence after tears

The moments I remember
The moments I still fear

The day that brought me something
I never thought I'd see

The night I asked a question
And heard no answer back from me

It's all inside His house
It's all beneath His sky

And maybe I have spent my life
just trying to understand why

When what I really needed
was to learn how to remain

Inside the world He gave me
And see His hand again

Not asking for a world
without sorrow

Not asking for a road
without pain

But asking for the eyes
to recognize

That nothing here
is outside His name

And then he asks for נֹעַם
The beauty of השם

Not only when the road is bright
Not only when I understand

There is a deeper beauty
That I have never seen

A beauty in the waiting
A beauty in between

The beauty of a story
That only He can see

The beauty of a world
That isn't centered around me

The beauty of surrender
The beauty of אֱמוּנָה

To know that I am looking
From a very limited side

And still to look for beauty
Still to search for light

Still to know that every piece
belongs to something right

Not everything is easy
Not everything feels good

But maybe
is seeing more than I could

And then comes

Not just to enter
Not just to pass it by

But to look into the details
To open up my eyes

To see every small piece
And where it has its place

To see the hidden harmony
inside the whole creation

The things that seem unrelated
The things that seem apart

The road that crossed another road
The meeting of two hearts

The years that led to yesterday
The choices that led me here

The things I thought were accidents
The things I called unclear

To look again
And look again

Until the pieces start to show

That what I thought was separate
was never separate at all

Not one request.

Not one thing
among a thousand things.

The thing I am asking for
is אַחַת.

To see אֶחָד.

To see one world.

One story.

One truth.

One השם.

[Build]

I don't want a different world

I want different eyes

I don't need every question
answered tonight

I want to see the One
inside the things I see

I want to see the beauty
I could never see alone

I want to walk through His house
and finally know I'm home
